While divorced and bickering grandparents watch their grandchildren, a lab experiment gone awry transforms the elders into teenagers again.

This movie is awesome. The twin that placed the young grandmother acted that part out so well, and also the grandfather’s young actor! This movie makes you realise how important it is to not be in a rush to grow up don’t take things for granted, especially one’s life.

11. This Christmas

The Whitfield siblings come home to their mother Shirley after four years to celebrate Christmas with her and pretend to not know the secret surrounding her marital status and a boyfriend.

It’s a great story. It combines comedy, drama, and a soul train line! It is my favourite Christmas show. It’s great to see love, betrayal, and reconciliation with this African American family. Chris Brown was great in this as “baby”. The cast has lots of “A” list actors. Regina King gave us a hilarious idea for cheating husbands. These family problems are a reflection of a modern family. The music is great too. It’s a story we all can relate to at Christmas.

10. The Princess and the Frog

  • Year: 2009

A young waitress, Tiana, embarks on a hilarious adventure after her fateful kiss with a frog prince who cannot wait to be human again.

The animation is stunningly beautiful (even the end credits are gorgeous), the soundtrack is fantastic, and there are so many wonderful characters it’s hard to choose a favorite. The main character, Tiana, is hardworking, ambitious, and intelligent. Yes, part of the story is her falling in love with a man, but that isn’t her goal in the movie, and it isn’t the point of the story. Their story is all about being true to yourself, working hard for what you want and believing in yourself. It’s also about realising what’s important in life, and not getting so wrapped up in how you think life should go that you miss out on other great things.

9. A Soldier’s Story

  • Year: 1984
  • IMDB Rating: 7.2/10
  • Director: Norman Jewison

  • Language:  English
  • Runtime:  1h 41 minutes

Contrary to the belief that Sergeant Vernon Waters was killed by the members of the Ku Klux Klan, Captain Richard Davenport believes that he was racially abused and tries to gather evidence.

Each of the characters poured themselves into their roles and became everything you would want to see as an authentic reaction and response to challenges on film. Difficult subject matter because the film aptly puts race, murder, ambition and resistance on the table while the characters navigate these obstacles. And they literally did not miss a beat. Wisdom, humour, loss, and pride is The Soldier’s Story. We have returned to this story again and again to learn more about ourselves and others that came before us.

  • Year: 2006
  • IMDB Rating: 7.3/10
  • Director: Doug Atchison
  • Starring: Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Keke Palmer, Curtis Armstrong
  • Language:  English
  • Runtime:  1h 52 minutes

Akeelah, a young gifted girl, comes from a dysfunctional family and is on the verge of quitting school. She discovers that she has a high aptitude for spellings and enters a spelling bee contest.

Excellent film about the dreams and goals of a young girl, in her pursuit of a National Spelling Bee win. Lawrence Fishburne is excellent as her tutor. Keke Palmer has a breakout role as the star speller. We need more movies like this that centers around academics and discipline with our youth and educational system. Morals and values are often devalued in today’s society that prefers to be entertained by violence and sexual stimulation.

7. Lilo & Stitch

  • Year: 2002
  • IMDB Rating: 7.3/10
  • Director: Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois
  • Starring: Chris Sanders, Daveigh Chase, Tia Carrere, Ving Rhames

  • Runtime:  1h 25 minutes

Stitch, an extraterrestrial entity, heads straight to planet Earth after he escapes his prison, where he tries to impersonate a dog. Things take a turn when Lilo adopts him from an animal shelter.

The direction is solid, as is the animation. The water, and backdrop of Hawaii is desirable. The characters are developed, unlike most Disney classics, and lovable. You can identify with these characters and feel for them, and yes, Stitch does qualify in that category. His battered emotions, as well as the also adorable Lilo, are part of what makes this film so moving. This is an original, funny, and extremely heartwarming film that I highly recommend to families.

6. The Great Debaters

  • Year: 2007
  • IMDB Rating: 7.5/10
  • Director: Denzel Washington

Melvin B Tolson, a professor at Wiley College, motivates his students to form the first-ever debate team. Hard work pays off when the team defeats Harvard in the national championship.

This movie has inspiration. Inspiration to fight oppression, exclusion and inner struggles. It tells how a debate experience can change your life. If you are a history buff this movie will take you there and back. There is one horrific scene but such was life in the 1930s down south. Denzel Washington gives another one of his superb excellent acting presentations.

5. Boyz In The Hood

A gritty , realistic drama about 3 African American boys living in a violent neighborhood filled with drug dealers , gun toting goons and other bad elements of the society . All three of these boys have different aspirations , hopes and dreams but their biggest concern is to stay alive. The director John singleton is clearly the star of the film his desire to bring this story to the screen is evident and he shoots the film in a very real and authentic way so much so that it feels like you are watching a documentary about a real place.

4. Imitation Of Life

A look back in time and how racism and the challenges of a black mother with a child with lighter skin that wants to be white. Not only that but the mother is even taken advantage of in the business that bore her name. It’s such a sad, tragic story that is heartbreaking to watch. This movie is filled with emotions, definitely gonna bring tears to your eyes.

So many good actors This is a classic movie about family and relationships. It’s an excellent movie for anyone or any race. Great writing, direction, and actors. Amazing character development. 2. Soul

  • IMDB Rating: 8/10
  • Director: Pete Docter
  • Starring:  Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House

  • Runtime:  1h 40 minutes

A jazz musician, stuck in a mediocre job, finally gets his big break. However, when a wrong step takes him to the Great Before, he tries to help an infant soul in order to return to reality.

Soul is well worth signing up for the service, as it’s one of the very best Pixar efforts in years. Soul is perhaps the most existentially ambitious film ever attempted by Disney. Soul live up to Pixar’s own impossibly high standards, it represents the very best the studio has to offer: beauty, humour, heart, a gut-punch of an existential crisis. The children will laugh and cheer; the adults will sob until their muscles ache.

If you’re looking for the best Christmas movie with your family soul is the best choice.

1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

  • Year: 2018
  • IMDB Rating: 8.4/10
  • Director:  Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, Rodney Rothman
  • Starring:  Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali
  • Language:  English
  • Runtime:  1h 56 minutes

After gaining superpowers from a spider bite, Miles Morales protects the city as Spider-Man. Soon, he meets alternate versions of himself and gets embroiled in an epic battle to save the multiverse.

The story is also complex and real. The amount of attention put into the writing has made this story so believable, despite easily tackling concepts such as multiple realities and super-powered individuals.  Overall, nothing I could say could do this film justice. This is a film that me and so many other comic book fans have been waiting for and oh boy, we were in for a treat. This film was dedicated to the memories of the creators of Spider-Man, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and this film couldn’t have honoured them in any better way.
